Evening 3 Step

The Evening Three Step is probably the easiest of the New Vogue dances. It is a fantastic beginner level sequence that features recurring themes and very few changes in rhythm. When danced socially the simplicity of the sequence makes the dance more enjoyable; especially when set to more modern music. When taken to the next level the dance is a great sequence for learning basic steps like the three step and roatary chasse.

Learn the Evening Three Step at Long-Steps

We’ll take you through all the steps from scratch. This is a beginner level dance so, even if you’ve never danced before, this one is for you. You do not need a partner to learn the dance, your instructor will dance through it with you.

Long-Steps currently teaches the Evening Three Step periodically during our Adult Classes and by Private Tuition.

Long-Steps teaches the Evening Three Step according to a combination of Russ Hesketh’s New Vogue Championship Dances (6th Ed.) and Neville Boyd’s New Vogue Sequence Dancing and the Viennese Waltz.

History of the Evening Three Step

The history of the Evening Three Step begins with the Eva Three Step, an arrangement by Sidney Painter first seen in England in 1904. The Eva Three Step was choreographed after a dance called the Veleta brought sequence dancing into popularity again in 1900. At this time dance scripts were written using ballet terms with a strong focus on foot positions.

Decades after the Eva Three Step was incepted in England, the dance script found its way to Australia. However, the Australian dance teachers at that time had little knowledge of the Veleta or Eva Three Step, and little experience in interpreting the balletic scripts that described them.

Alber Boal, a well known Australian dance teacher and choreographer of several noted sequences, was originally from Belfast and had previous experience with the Eva Three Step. Albert found that the Australian version of the Eva Three Step was so different to British version that he renamed it the Evening Three Step.

By the 1930’s the Evening Three Step had been inshrined as one of the first Australian New Vogue sequences. While often only found in junior and lower grades, the Evening Three Step remains a permanent competion fixture as well as a social favourite.
